Ad De Roo

Ad de Roo (1963) is since 1997 full-time employed at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra (Italy), currently as project leader "Water Energy Food Ecosystem Nexus". He is also a part-time professor of Physical Geography, especially Hazards and Impact "at the Department of Earth Sciences, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. He studied physical geography, environmental science and tropical soil science and obtained a PhD from the University of Utrecht in 1993.

He works especially in projects where water issues are central, and particularly extreme events like floods and water scarcity, in Europe, Africa and at Global scale. He has specialized in the field of large-scale modeling of water quantity, for which he developed the models and LISEM, LISFLOOD, and LISQUAL. He is co-author of the LISFLOOD-FP floodplain inundation model. He is the initiator of the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) that issues operational flood forecasts to European authorities. His current main interests are the impact of future climate and socio-economic change on water resources and how specific policy measures could mitigate the effects.
