Dr Giovanni Federigo De Santi

Director of Directorate D “Sustainable Resources”, European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC)

Giovanni De Santi holds a University Degree in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering from the University of Pisa, and a PhD Degree in Fluid dynamics from the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

He has been working at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission since 1985, where he developed his professional expertise in the fields of energy, transport, environment, climate change, agriculture and space.

In 2007, he was nominated Director of the Institute for Energy and Transport (IET). In this capacity he was responsible for the coordination and management of studies and activities within the European Commission’s Energy Union Strategy (energy security, energy efficiency, decarbonised transport, electrification of transport, energy markets, etc.) and in the frame of international cooperation between the EU and key countries such as the USA (US-EPA, US-DoE), China (China-SEPA) and Japan. In 2017, Dr De Santi was appointed Director of the Sustainable Resources Directorate. This Directorate provides independent scientific evidence to support the development, implementation, evaluation and coherence of EU policies, mainly in the areas of agriculture and rural development, food security, development cooperation, environment and climate change, blue growth and fisheries, the bioeconomy, industry and trade, and Earth observation.

He is the coordinator of all JRC activities that support the decision of the President of the European Commission to attribute a central role to the UN 2030 Agenda and its SDGs and to frame sustainable development as the cornerstone of the national and EU policies.

He is the author of peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, and chairman of many international conferences and scientific boards.

Dr De Santi also teaches the "Energy Security" course at the Politecnico Torino.
